Former Great Britain coach David Waite insists that a successful Super League club in France will be a major boost for the international game.
Waite is set to join Perpignan next month as the French club prepare for their entry into Super League in 2006 and the Australian is excited about the prospects for rugby league in France.
Following the success of the recent Tri-Nations tournament, international rugby league is enjoying a resurgence and a competitive France would be a major boost for the game.
"I have always been supportive of expansion and if we can get a Super League in France that is competitive there is no way the international game is not going to improve," said Waite, who will join the French club as Director of Football following four years with the RFL as first Great Britain coach and then performance director.
"The evolution of Perpignan to 2006 and beyond is very exciting. I think Perpignan is an exciting project and there are lots of positives for the game."
France did have a presence at the foundation of the Super League in 1996, but Paris St Germain folded after just two seasons.
Perpignan peut booster le rugby mondial..
